We all are free to think what we want, even those who are imprisoned still decide their thoughts if they are not mentally impaired. We are so free that we can choose thoughts that are negative, unpleasant, and make us feel bad. That’s how free we are. Being mindful of those destructive thoughts takes practice. We are all so comfortable with the negativity we don’t even notice when we are doing it.
It takes time to modify behavior, so be easy about it. Beating yourself up for having a negative thought is just as bad as having the thought! Changing one thought, one step at a time is all any of us can do.
“Today I will listen to my self-talk and how I speak about my life to others. I will notice when I am being negative, and as gently as I can, reach for another thought that feels better.”
