I am the first to say “Yippee” to the internet. I could not do the business I do without it, stay connected to people all over the world, share my music, or this blog, so yes, I love the internet. However, the internet has also made it way too easy to speak without thinking. I am not talking about free speech I am talking about reactionary venom sent without consequence. Think about it. If you had to walk up to someone and say what you are so willing to write in a text, tweet, post, or email, could you do it? Probably not.
This is something I practice in my personal life and my professional one. SAVE DRAFT!
Go ahead, get it all out, it’s a good thing. Now hit save draft instead of SEND. Then talk to a friend, watch your favorite program, listen to some music, or just take a nap.
Later, come back to your SAVE DRAFT and read what you wrote. Can you say it better, more clearly, with more love for yourself and the person you are upset with? The point is to be HEARD, isn’t it? Edit the draft, or throw it out and start again. Keep saving it until you can read it and feel LOVE. I am not kidding. When you can read an email or post that expresses your feelings well, you will feel love for yourself. If you feel fear or anger, you are not there yet.
The practice of learning to express yourself deliberately and to be HEARD and UNDERSTOOD takes time. When in doubt, DON’T. You will find that you have less pain in your life by practicing restraint of pen and tongue, or in this case, keyboard.
“Today I promise myself that I will practice “Save Draft” when I feel that I have something to express which causes me to be upset. Once I can read my words and feel love for myself, and others, I will hit “SEND”.
